What Types of Double Sided Tapes are There?

First, when we speak about double-sided tapes we mean a tape that is sticky on either side of the tape, unlike single-sided tapes which is sticky on one side only.

There are many different varieties of double sided tapes that are suited to different types of domestic and industrial applications, some include:

  • VHB™ Tape – Very High Bonding tape was invented by 3M. Since their patent expired, other manufactures have developed comparable and expanded its technology. VHB  is suitable for heavy duty, industrial applications for long-term bonding.
  • Adhesive Transfer Tape – No internal  material (tissue, film, foam), just a silicone release liner
  • Foam Tape – Used for bonding textured surfaces or to fill gaps in materials
  • Thick Bonding – Used for bonding uneven, textured surfaces
  • Thin Bonding – Used when space is limited or more flexibility is desired

What Is Double Sided Tape Used For?

Double sided tapes can be used for when you require an invisible bond, whether that may be for bonding parallel surfaces together or for display components. They can be used as an alternative to mechanical fastenings, much like single sided tapes, as they can be hidden whilst still providing strong adhesion.

What Surfaces Are Best For Double Sided?

Double sided tapes are best suited for flat surfaces, but some can be used for uneven, textured surfaces if required. Some suitable materials include: metals, sealed wood, paper and cardboard. Their performance is compromised if you use powder-coated metals or any other chemically adapted substrates that make the surface hard to stick against.

What Are the Advantages Of Double Sided Tape?

Some of the advantages of using double sided tapes are similar to ones for single sided tapes including:

  • The ability to bond dissimilar materials, especially ones with texture and uneven surfaces
  • Reduces assembly time and eliminates the need for surface refinishing
  • Provides a thinner and lighter alternative to mechanical fastening
  • Provides a uniform thickness and gap filling properties whilst reducing vibration and noise impact
  • Provides an improved aesthetic finish with the invisible bonding capability
