There are various options to floating artwork, pictures, graphics from a display wall.

Floating art off a wall refers to having a gap from the wall to the start of the artwork. It appears as if the art is levitating or floating off the wall, and if the floating mount is not visible, it seems like it’s magic. It can look pretty cool.

The device that can create the floating art effect is called by various names, Float mount blocks, boards, hangers, spacers, and floating frame. The complexity of such devices can be fairly simple to create and use and some that could be expensive and time consuming.

We will look at the various option for floating artwork from the wall, and examine some pros and cons of each device.

Many of the floating devices are unique to the type of artwork being floated.

The float device below looks like a tangled web of metal but is effectively used and unique to Sandusky art frames.

The barrel type of art spacer is one that you may have seen in offices and showrooms. It is one of the earliest type of floaters used on frameless art prints. They typically extend from half-inch to one-inch and come in chrome, gold, and other custom finishes. The hardware costs from $18.00 to $100.00 for a set of four.

The MDF or wood block spacer, is a thick device that is glued to the back of the frame and you would then hang the art from screw slots, like a traditional framed print. The exact way you mount the block to the artwork and wall will vary slightly depending on the manufacture. You will not be able to use this system, on canvas artwork.

Adhesive Float Blocks option

The advantages of the adhesive block floater system, is it’s versatility, it could be used on framed and frameless artwork, canvas, metal, acrylic art prints.

Artwork can be extended, floated, from 1/2″ to 2” off the wall (the limit of other systems is 1”)

Ease of use. Simply peel and stick the art on the wall. You could also place the adhesive float blocks closer to center of artwork to make it seem invisible.

Economics. One of the least expensive options for floating artwork.

The floating blocks have a very strong permanent adhesive and will leave foam residue when removed from the wall. There is a re-movable adhesive option, but the thickest float available is 1/2″
