The interesting history of “killer Red” double sided tape.

If you use double-sided adhesive tapes, you will eventually hear the term “Killer Red” to describe a particularly aggressive double-sided tape with good adhesive grab and hold. But what exactly is this tape?

It’s an 8mils thick acrylic adhesive double-sided tape with a pet film carrier and a red tinted film liner. It sticks well to low surface energy (hard to stick to), such as UV treated print graphics, and for this reason it’s a favorite with print shops.

The name “Killer Red” is branded by Bron tapes. It is said that a customer said to a Bron sales representative, “that red tape is a killer.”

If you try to market your tape under the name of Killer Red, you may find a very legal letter in your in-box asking you to cease and desist. For this reason, you hear other names for a similar tape branded as “Duraco Red” “Monster Red” or just “the Red Tape”

What is called Killer Red was actually invented by Tesa Tape, who is not allowed to use Killer Red to market its own tape. Instead Tesa markets as “Tesa 4965 Original.” Tells you the power of trade mark registration and marketing. What you mostly see in the market today is not made by Tesa. After the patent expired manufactures started to copy the tape. Most have very similar technical specifications that is seen in the market place. At 8mils thick it is about twice as thick as your typical film tape, which may be more than needed for many applications. Ask your tape expert on the most appropriate tape for your application.
