Double-sided Tape Options for Transit Packaging

We will identify and discuss double sided tape options for transit packaging. We refer to transit packaging as a flexible package that is delivered to the consumer via a delivery carrier (Amazon, FedEx, UPS, USPS, etc.). The package could be a corrugated box, Bubble, Kraft Paper, and poly bag that will be closed and sealed with a double-sided tape.

In discussing tapes for transit applications, we are considering all tape options with an easy lift feature (“extended liner”, “finger-lift”)

Transfer Tape: Technically not a double-sided but it is sticky on both sides of the tape. This tape has a single layered adhesive, whereas a true double-sided tape has material in the middle layer (called a carrier made of plastic or tissue).

Transfer tape is the thinnest tape option and used for lighter application like closure of envelopes and poly bags. Thickness starts at 1mil and can be as thick as 10 mil, depending on the manufacture.

Adhesives available as a removable adhesive, permanent adhesive, and freezer grade for food packging.

Typical Uses

  • Bag Closure
  • General OEM
  • Paper and Tyvek Envelopes
  • Paper to Paper Laminations

Tissue Tape: As the name implies, this tape has a tissue layer. The tissue is in the middle of the tape (carrier) and adds internal strength to the tape. Tissue tape is the compromise of a transfer tape and film tape (discussing later). Stronger than a transfer tape but not as strong as a film tape (here we refer to the sheer and internal strength and not the strength of the adhesive itself)

Typical thicknesses of tissue tapes are from 2.5 mils to 4 mils. You might consider a tissue tape if you need more strength than a transfer tape and need the conformability. The tissue allows it to go into the nook of uneven surfaces, like that of corrugate.

Typical Uses

  • Business forms
  • General OEM
  • Graphic Arts
  • Corrugated boxes
  • Paper and Tyvek Envelopes
  • Paper to Paper Laminations

Film Tape: This tape has a thin film layer in the middle of the tape, typically .5mil polyester film. With a film tape, now you have more interesting options. You could have two different adhesives on each side of the tape. A permanent adhesive on one side and removable adhesive on the other, for removing and resealing, for example. You could also receive the tape with different thicknesses on either side. You might want a thicker adhesive layer on side for more aggressive needs on one side of a substrate, for example.

Manufactures could also apply a pattern adhesive coat. This serves to lower the adhesive cost and adds an easy lift feature as well.

Typical Uses

  • High tension box flaps
  • Point of Purchase
  • Business forms
  • General OEM
  • Graphic Arts
  • Reclosable packaging
