3M Adhesive Tapes 9471LE and 9472LE why these tapes are the gold standard for transfer tapes and their typical applications.

94721LE and 9472LE is constructed with 3M 300LSE adhesive, which is a high-strength acrylic adhesive line designed specifically to bond Low Surface Energy (LSE) materials that are normally very difficult to stick to. Both are adhesive transfer tapes, meaning they don’t have a center supporting material such as a pet film, but are, rather, consists of a single layer of adhesive.

So before discussing the specific performance advantages and applications for 94721LE and 9472LE, let’s review the general advantages of transfer tapes.

  • Maximum Surface Contact (Wettability): Double-sided tapes use a central carrier film or tissue that acts like a rigid wall, preventing the adhesive from flowing into microscopic valleys and rough textures on a substrate. Transfer tapes have no backing, allowing the adhesive to completely wet and conform to uneven, textured, or irregular surfaces
  • No Carrier Temperature Limits: The temperature resistance of a double-sided tape is often capped by the melting point or thermal limit of its paper or plastic carrier. Transfer tapes (especially acrylic or silicone formulations) can withstand much higher operating temperatures, often up to 500°F–550°F
  • Optical Clarity: Because there is no internal scrim, paper, or cloudy plastic film trapped in the middle, transfer tapes offer superior light transmission and optical clarity for clear displays or windows
  • Die-Cutting Ease: They integrate smoothly into high-speed rotary die-cutting and web- laminating processes for custom-shaped parts
  • Superior Conformability: Wraps seamlessly around sharp edges, curves, and textured substrates without carrier-induced lifting.
  • Higher Shear and Bond Strength: Direct adhesive-to-substrate contact across a larger actual surface area often yields a stronger, more reliable bond than carrier-interrupted tapes because the adhesive is now “integrated” with the substrate.

3M 94721LE and 9472LE demonstrate these advantages and more. They are chemically engineered differently than traditional adhesives  that rely heavily on polar interactions to bond. 3M LSE tapes  bond effectively to plastics like polyethylene and polypropylene. Painted surfaces using powder coating or anodized aluminum because they quickly wet-out on the surface of these substrates.

uniquely designed to absorb or bypass light machine oil contamination on metals or molded parts. It migrates through the micro-layer of oil to establish a direct structural bond with the underlying substrate

Unlike older generations of high-performance adhesives that depend on heavy chemical solvents during production, 3M utilizes a solventless manufacturing process for the 300LSE line. This leaves the polymer matrix inherently free of volatile organic compound (VOC) outgassing, reducing Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions while preserving its dense cross-linked strength

They key difference between 9471LE and 9472LE is the coat weight, or adhesive thickness.

9472LE is more than double the thickness of 9471LE at 5 mils thick while 9471LE is 2 mils thick.

  • When to use 9472LE:
  • Textured or rough surfaces: The extra 5-mil thickness allows the adhesive to flow (“wet out”) deeper into the nooks, crannies, and micro-textures of rough or uneven substrates.
  • Heavy-duty nameplates, graphic overlays, and trim: Ideal for automotive emblems, battery packs, and industrial equipment identification where a thicker, higher-cushion or higher-holding bond layer is needed.
  • Slightly oily or contaminated surfaces: Provides strong performance on metals or plastics with minor surface oils.

  • When to use 9471LE  instead:
  • Ultra-thin assemblies: Use 9471LE when your design requires a minimal gap between bonded components—such as thin consumer electronics (phone/tablet digitizers, LCD/OLED frames) or compact medical devices.
  • Precision die-cutting: Better suited when a very thin profile is mandated by tight mechanical tolerances.
